Not so for Wayne McClelland, a "mostly retired" aerospace engineer who's ushered in the golden years with humanitarian aid trips. "I've always loved going to remote places," says the 64-year-old Incline Village resident. "Particularly primitive remote places." McClelland is a volunteer and past Truckee chapter president of Los Médicos Voladores, the Flying Doctors, who donate their time and spend their own gas money to fly mostly single-engine planes to bring medical care and supplies to the poorest of the poor in Mexico, Central/South America, and the Coachella Valley of Southern California. The 100 percent volunteer-run organization was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1975 and includes doctors, dentists, optometrists, translators, general volunteers, and pilots. |
