US News and World Report: "There was little change among the top-20 ranked National Universities, though the University of Chicago jumped four spots, from a tie for ninth last year to a tie for fifth this year." National University rankings
Proud to announce that Sean, having just completed his first year, has been placed on the Dean's List, the highest undergraduate academic achievement at the University of Chicago.
The University of Chicago has a reputation as a favorite destination of the true intellectual: students here are interested in learning for learning’s sake and they aren’t afraid to express their opinions. A rigorous, intellectually challenging, and world-renowned research university, the University of Chicago continues to offer a community where students thrive and ideas matter. Here, an attitude of sharp questioning seems to be the focus, rather than the more relaxed inquiry and rumination approach at some schools of equal intellectual repute. Many find welcome challenges in the debates and discussions that define the campus atmosphere; the typical Chicago student is task-oriented, intellectually driven, sharp, vocal, and curious.
The undergraduate program at Chicago emphasizes critical thinking through a broad-based liberal arts curriculum. At the heart of the experience is the Common Core: a series of distribution requirements in the humanities, science, and mathematics. No lecture courses here—Core courses are discussion-based, and enrollment is limited to 20. Chicago’s numerous major programs range from early Christian literature to media studies, history, linguistics, and math. Many students also choose to study abroad (the school offers more than 40 overseas programs in 19 countries) or to collaborate with faculty on research projects.
Academics are supplemented by a lively campus environment, which includes an extensive library network, professional museums, a repertory theater company, and numerous classical music ensembles. Over 400 student-run clubs are on offer here. The campus is located in the Hyde Park neighborhood, about seven miles south of downtown Chicago. Some students find the neighborhood to be a bit too quiet, but others enjoy the community’s eclectic and diverse atmosphere.
